To run this content without clipping, you’ll need to correctly set your gains on both sub-bass and mid-high amps using -5dB test tones.
Head Unit & Signal Chain Settings:
• Set all head unit settings flat – no EQ adjustments, no bass boost.
• Disable processing on DSPs, inline EQs, and any other signal-altering devices.
• Find the cleanest output from your head unit by using a -5dB track with 40Hz for rear/sub RCA outputs and 1-5kHz for front RCA preouts.
• Use an oscilloscope or a DD-1 alongside a DMM to verify a clean AC signal coming from your RCA preouts before setting your amplifier gains. This ensures proper signal integrity and prevents unwanted distortion. 🚀🔊

Max Clean Output – After identifying the max clean output of your head unit, turn it down 1-2 clicks on vol to leave headroom from clipping. This extra headroom not only prevents distortion but also gives you the ability to enter soft clip during competitions by simply turning your head unit volume back up those 1-2 clicks when needed
, giving you a few extra tenths of dB output without pushing into hard clipping—which, on most setups, may actually be quieter than soft clipping. 🚀
Gain Setting Process:
• Use an oscilloscope or a DD-1 alongside a DMM to ensure clean AC rail output on all amps. When performing this step, keep your head unit volume 1-2 clicks down from max clean output (as mentioned earlier) to maintain headroom and prevent clipping. 🔊
• Use the correct frequency (tone) and level output (-5dB) to properly set gains on the corresponding amps. Slowly turn your gain pot up until you see clipping on the oscilloscope or DD-1
, then back off until the signal is clean.
Be sure to write down the clean AC voltage output from that amp, as this will be essential for gain matching multiple sub amps later if needed.

If you have multiple sub amps sharing a common space, match your filters and gain voltages to the first amp you set up. After determining the max clean AC rail voltage from your primary sub amp in the previous step, replicate this output voltage across all additional sub amps to ensure proper filter and gain matching. This process guarantees mechanical alignment and a perfectly synchronized bass response, maximizing efficiency and performance. 🔥
